The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has partnered with Fiji Rice Limited to boost rice production in the country. This collaboration was formalized through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aimed at implementing integrated farming practices that align with the sugarcane industry’s objectives.
The primary focus of this partnership is to utilize fallow land for rice cultivation, which is expected to enhance soil fertility and overall productivity. Fiji Rice has emphasized that diversifying into rice farming will offer farmers an additional revenue stream, thereby contributing positively to their financial stability.
As part of this initiative, farmers will receive opportunities to combine rice cultivation with other crops, facilitating better land use, improving food security, and empowering local farming communities. Furthermore, the program will provide educational resources, training, and practical support to help farmers adopt sustainable practices and new agricultural technologies.
This partnership highlights a promising step towards improving agricultural diversity in Fiji and showcases the potential of collaborative efforts in enhancing food production and farmer livelihoods. By equipping farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge, this initiative could lead to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector in the country.
