Suspended Commissioner of Corrections Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa has taken steps to address his recent suspension, having instructed his legal counsel to engage with President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, and his line minister, Siromi Turaga. This suspension, which has drawn significant scrutiny, stems from allegations of “misbehavior.”
Nakarawa emphasized his commitment to preserving the integrity and independence of his office even while he respects the decision of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) regarding his suspension. In a statement, he noted, “While I respect the decision, critical issues must be highlighted.” He expressed concerns over a coordinated attack he faced on social media before the COC meeting, which he deemed personal and defamatory in nature.
The context surrounding Nakarawa’s situation is noteworthy as it parallels ongoing discussions about governance practices within the Fiji government. Prime Minister Rabuka has acknowledged that he is still awaiting a detailed explanation from Minister Siromi Turaga regarding the circumstances leading to Nakarawa’s suspension.
