The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has revealed that Fiji consumes 92 terabytes of data monthly for accessing pornographic and adult content. In a Ministerial Statement, he highlighted the significant role that such content plays in network traffic, with data from a three-month period showing a total data use of approximately 626 terabytes, placing this usage among the top ten data consumers in the country.
Kamikamica emphasized that this 626 terabytes is roughly the equivalent of 100 million books, indicating the vast scale of consumption. He noted, “The numbers do not lie… we can be assured that the industry is huge.”
In response to these findings, the Deputy Prime Minister announced that the Cabinet has approved the formation of a National Taskforce aimed at addressing the issues surrounding pornography and its societal impacts in Fiji. This taskforce is intended to provide insights into the risks associated with pornography and offer recommendations for effectively managing these risks.
Kamikamica asserted that the task force represents a serious commitment from the Coalition Government. He stated that it is a proactive measure to protect communities and vulnerable individuals. He also indicated that the government is in the process of finalizing a Cabinet paper to join the WeProtect Global Alliance, an international initiative dedicated to combating online child sexual abuse.
