Fiji’s Surprising Data Habit: The Alarming Statistics on Adult Content Consumption

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, has revealed that an average of 92 terabytes of data is consumed monthly in Fiji to access pornographic materials or adult content. In his Ministerial Statement, Kamikamica highlighted that adult content has significantly impacted internet usage, making up a substantial portion of network traffic.

According to data collected over three months, approximately 626 terabytes of data were downloaded, placing it among the top ten categories of data traffic. This volume is comparable to the equivalent of 100 million books.

Kamikamica emphasized the notable consumption of adult content, stating, “The numbers do not lie… we can be assured that the industry is huge.” In response to these findings, the Cabinet has approved the establishment of a National Taskforce aimed at addressing the issue of pornography in Fiji. The taskforce will explore the societal risks associated with pornography and generate recommendations to tackle these challenges effectively.

The Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that this initiative is more than just a symbolic action; it demonstrates the Coalition Government’s determination to safeguard communities and protect vulnerable citizens. He also announced that a Cabinet paper is being finalized for the Fiji Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children, to join the WeProtect Global Alliance, which focuses on combating child sexual abuse online.
