Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica disclosed that the country consumes 92 terabytes of data monthly for viewing adult content and pornography. In a Ministerial Statement, he emphasized that pornographic materials have established a substantial presence, taking up a significant share of the network traffic.
Kamikamica noted that data collected over three months revealed approximately 626 terabytes of data downloaded, ranking among the top ten categories of data traffic usage. He compared the amount of data to around 100 million books, indicating the scale of consumption.
“The prevalence of adult content and pornography is evident, accounting for a large portion of network traffic. The figures speak for themselves, confirming the industry’s significant impact,” he stated.
The Deputy Prime Minister mentioned that the Cabinet has approved the formation of a National Taskforce aimed at addressing pornography and understanding its societal risks in Fiji, alongside providing recommendations to effectively tackle these challenges.
Kamikamica highlighted that the task force represents a genuine commitment from the Coalition Government to take action, serving as a proactive approach to protect communities and especially vulnerable citizens. He also indicated that they are finalizing a Cabinet paper for Fiji to join the WeProtect Global Alliance, focusing on combating online child sexual abuse, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Women and Children.
