Fiji’s Suicide Crisis: A Call for Open Conversations and Support

From 2016 to 2021, the Fiji Police Force reported a total of 1,276 suicides and attempted suicides, averaging 212 cases annually, with approximately half resulting in fatalities. This information was shared by Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, during a parliamentary session focused on the ministry’s suicide prevention strategies.

Dr. Lalabalavu noted that the year 2019 saw the highest number of suicide and attempted suicide cases, totaling 244, with the Western Division consistently reporting the most incidents throughout the six-year period. He emphasized the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide by promoting a culture of openness and support rather than one shrouded in silence and stigma.

He referenced data from the World Health Organization (WHO), which states that around 800,000 individuals die by suicide each year globally. Dr. Lalabalavu urged citizens to engage in conversations about suicide and its prevention, asserting that even small discussions can foster a more understanding and supportive community. He encouraged starting these crucial conversations in various social settings, including places of worship and community gatherings.
