The Fiji Police Force has reported concerning statistics regarding suicides and attempted suicides for the period of January 1 to January 22, revealing a total of 63 cases this year compared to 66 during the same timeframe last year. Additionally, there were 44 attempted suicide cases recorded this year, down from 47 in the previous year.

Acting Police Commissioner Sakeo Raikaci expressed alarm over these figures and emphasized the importance of fostering acceptance and understanding within the community to address the growing social issues facing society.

The data indicates that eight victims under the age of 18 were involved in suicide or attempted suicide cases. The most significant number of incidents occurred among individuals over 60 years old, with 19 suicides and two attempted suicides reported. Males were particularly affected, accounting for 50 of the reported suicide cases.

Commissioner Raikaci is urging community leaders to work towards altering the perception surrounding mental health issues. He stressed the need to cultivate a culture of support and create safe environments for individuals to express their feelings.

In addressing the contemporary challenges in policing, Raikaci highlighted the increasing problem of cyberbullying, encouraging Fijians to also exhibit care and compassion in online interactions.

The police have identified several factors contributing to suicide and attempted suicide, including marital and family disputes, relationship issues, stress, and health problems.

The theme for World Suicide Prevention Day in 2024 is “Changing the Narrative,” with an emphasis on initiating conversations about mental health.
