In Solove Sector, Seqaqa, a notable success story is emerging within Fiji’s sugarcane farming community, demonstrating the impact of perseverance and innovation. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two, is the founder of Isharat Farm Services and has significantly improved his life and the livelihoods of many cane farmers by providing crucial tractor services in the region.
After leaving school in Form 4, Murti began his career as a cane harvester and later became the manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm). He identified a vital opportunity within the sugarcane industry, prompted by a new initiative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
In 2022, with support from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited and the Ministry of Agriculture, Murti boldly ventured into becoming a transport service provider. He noted a shortage of tractors in the sector, which hindered land preparation for farmers. He explained that many growers struggled with upfront payments, but through the business plan concept and work order system from FSC, he was able to offer services without requiring immediate cash.
Beginning with a single tractor, Murti utilized his previous experience to assist local farmers in land preparation. His commitment to providing dependable services quickly garnered attention throughout the farming community. Today, his business has significantly grown to include a fleet of six tractors and various essential implements like disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, which are essential for sugarcane cultivation.
Murti expressed his gratitude for the support from FSC field officials and his team, stating that the work order system transformed his venture into a legitimate business, benefiting both him and the farmers. Additionally, he has resumed his own cane farming, cultivating 7.5 acres this year and planning further expansion in the future.
