Fiji’s Sugarcane Revolution: How One Man’s Vision Transformed Farming

In the Solove Sector of Fiji, an inspiring success story is emerging that showcases the resilience and innovation of the local sugarcane farming community. Sanjay Murti, a 47-year-old father of two and the founder of Isharat Farm Services, has significantly improved his own life and the livelihoods of many cane farmers by becoming a tractor service provider, addressing a pressing need in the industry.

Previously, Mr. Murti was a cane harvester and later a manager at Food Process (Batiri Citrus Farm) after leaving school in Form 4. He recognized a substantial opportunity in Fiji’s sugarcane sector, spurred by a new initiative from Fiji Sugar Corporation.

In 2022, with the backing of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Murti boldly ventured into the transport service sector. “I noticed a shortage of tractors in the industry, making it challenging for farmers to prepare their land,” he explained. “Many growers couldn’t afford to pay upfront, but with FSC’s business plan and work order system, I could provide services without requiring immediate cash payments. It was a win-win for everyone.”

Beginning with just one tractor, Mr. Murti leveraged his experience from Food Process to help local farmers prepare their land. His commitment to reliable service quickly gained the attention of farmers across the sector. Today, his business has grown significantly, now operating six tractors and an array of necessary implements, such as disc ploughs, tillers, slashers, and boom sprayers, all essential for sugarcane farming.

“With perseverance and support from FSC field officials and the team, I was able to expand the business,” he remarked. “The work order system allowed me to manage it effectively and the farmers benefited as well.” Additionally, Mr. Murti has returned to cane farming himself, cultivating 7.5 acres this year with plans for further growth.
