The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has condemned the recent increase in intentional fires set in sugarcane fields, labeling them as reckless and criminal. CEO Vinesh Kumar emphasized that these actions have serious consequences not only for farmers but also for the entire sugarcane sector.

Kumar stated, “Deliberately setting fire to sugarcane fields is not just a reckless act; it is also a criminal offense with severe repercussions.” He noted that SRIF has faced significant losses of critical research data due to these incidents.

He warned that a single act of arson could destroy valuable research within moments, undoing substantial progress and adversely affecting the industry’s future. Kumar highlighted that such actions jeopardize both the economic stability of farmers and the scientific research essential for the industry’s sustainability and growth. He affirmed that those who engage in these illegal activities will face strict legal consequences.

Kumar urged the community to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. He stressed, “By doing so, we can collectively protect our sugarcane fields, maintain the integrity of ongoing research, and ensure the continued success of our sugarcane industry.”
