Sugarcane farmers in Fiji are now able to access affordable healthcare through the newly launched Sugar Cane Growers’ Fund (SCGF) Loyalty Program. This initiative, announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during the opening of a Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) chamber at the Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH) Hospital in Nadi, aims to provide discounted medical services to the country’s approximately 10,500 active cane growers.

Professor Prasad highlighted that the SCGF Loyalty Program reflects the government’s commitment to supporting the sugar farming community, especially in rural areas. He emphasized that this partnership with PSH not only ensures accessible healthcare but also aligns with broader plans to modernize Fiji’s healthcare infrastructure, which includes significant projects like the establishment of a new 100-bed super-specialty hospital funded by the Indian Government.

Parvish Kumar, CEO of PSH, noted that the program would uplift the overall well-being of sugarcane farmers. By leveraging their collective buying power, the initiative aims to offer valuable medical services at reduced rates, thus rewarding the hard work of this vital agricultural sector. Furthermore, the program intends to extend its reach to additional regions, including Labasa, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals focusing on health and wellness.

In summary, the SCGF Loyalty Program represents a significant advancement for Fiji’s sugarcane farmers, promising not only improved access to healthcare but also contributing to the sustainability of the agricultural community. This initiative heralds a hopeful future, aiming to ensure that those who play a critical role in sustaining the nation can lead healthier lives, reinforcing their invaluable contribution to Fiji’s economy.

This initiative is a commendable step towards enhancing the quality of life for farmers, showcasing a concerted effort between the government and healthcare providers to support an essential sector in Fiji.
