A historic payment of $105.08 per tonne, marking the highest ever in Fiji’s sugar industry, will be issued to cane farmers this Diwali.

Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for the Sugar Industry, stated that this unprecedented support goes beyond mere financial aid; it represents a strong commitment to the dedication and resilience of every farmer.

He acknowledged the difficulties faced by farmers and noted that the Government, under Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuk, has significantly increased payments, raising the total from an initial $2.57 to $4 per tonne.

“This Diwali, we’re fulfilling our promise to support farmers, ease their lives a little, and honor the daily contributions they make to Fiji,” Singh said.

He emphasized that this landmark payment highlights the Coalition Government’s commitment to fostering a thriving sugar industry and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers, ensuring that their hard work is recognized.
