The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as reckless and criminal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, pointed out the extensive damage inflicted by these fires on farmers and the overall sugarcane industry. He reiterated that setting sugarcane fields on fire intentionally is a serious crime with significant consequences.
“These fires are not merely irresponsible; they are criminal acts that can lead to severe repercussions,” Dr. Kumar stated. He mentioned that SRIF has incurred major losses in vital research data as a result of these incidents. This data is crucial for fostering evidence-based advancements in the sugarcane sector and is often collected over extended periods.
Dr. Kumar cautioned that even one act of arson could destroy important research instantly, hindering progress and negatively affecting the industry’s future. He urged the public to recognize the seriousness of this issue, asserting that arson undermines the economic stability of farmers and threatens the scientific research essential for the industry’s sustainability and growth.
The SRIF has called on the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. “By collaborating, we can safeguard our sugarcane fields, protect vital research, and ensure the ongoing success of our industry,” he concluded.
