Fiji’s Sugar Industry on Alert: Arson Threatens Progress and Prosperity

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the alarming rise in intentional fires set in sugarcane fields, labeling these actions as reckless and criminal.

Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, emphasized the severe consequences these fires have for both farmers and the wider sugarcane industry. He stated that deliberately igniting sugarcane fields constitutes a criminal act with serious penalties.

“These fires are not merely irresponsible; they are criminal acts that entail significant repercussions,” remarked Dr. Kumar. He also mentioned that SRIF has experienced considerable losses in vital research data due to such incidents.

The data, accumulated over extended periods, is critical for fostering evidence-based improvements in the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that a single instance of arson could lead to the immediate loss of valuable research, hindering progress and negatively affecting the industry’s future.

He urged the community to recognize the seriousness of the issue, pointing out that arson threatens the economic stability of farmers and endangers essential scientific research vital for the industry’s sustainability and growth.

The SRIF has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. “By collaborating, we can safeguard our sugarcane fields, protect essential research, and ensure the ongoing success of our industry,” he concluded.
