The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the recent rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both reckless and criminal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the CEO of SRIF, emphasized the severe impact these fires have not only on farmers but on the entire sugarcane industry. He pointed out that deliberately setting these fields ablaze constitutes a criminal offense with significant penalties.
“These are not merely reckless acts; they are criminal actions that entail serious consequences,” Dr. Kumar stated. He noted that SRIF has faced considerable losses in vital research data because of these fires.
This research data, which is collected over extended periods, plays a crucial role in fostering evidence-based progress within the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that even a single act of arson could obliterate valuable research in a moment, hindering advancement and negatively affecting the industry’s future.
He urged the community to recognize the seriousness of the issue, highlighting that arson not only threatens the economic livelihoods of farmers but also endangers essential scientific research necessary for the industry’s long-term sustainability and growth.
SRIF has called on the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the authorities. “By collaborating, we can safeguard our sugarcane fields, protect important research, and assure the ongoing success of our industry,” he added.
