The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the recent rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both dangerous and illegal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the SRIF chief executive officer, stressed the significant harm these fires inflict, impacting not only farmers but also the entire sugarcane industry. He pointed out that deliberately igniting sugarcane fields is a criminal act that can lead to serious legal repercussions.
“These fires are not just reckless; they are criminal acts that carry serious consequences,” Dr. Kumar stated. He noted that SRIF has encountered major losses in critical research data due to these destructive incidents.
This research data, often compiled over extended periods, is vital for implementing evidence-based innovations in the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that a single instance of arson could erase invaluable research in moments, hindering progress and adversely affecting the industry’s future.
He appealed to the public to recognize the seriousness of the problem, stressing that arson threatens not only the economic viability of farmers but also the scientific inquiries essential for the industry’s sustainability and development.
The SRIF has urged the community to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviors to the authorities. “By working together, we can protect our sugarcane fields, preserve vital research, and ensure the continued prosperity of our industry,” he added.
