The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning about the recent rise in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both reckless and criminal.
Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the chief executive officer of SRIF, pointed out the severe damage inflicted by these fires, affecting not only farmers but the entire sugarcane industry. He stressed that deliberately igniting sugarcane fields is a criminal act that carries serious consequences.
“These fires are not just reckless; they are criminal acts that carry serious consequences,” Dr. Kumar stated. He highlighted that SRIF has experienced significant losses in essential research data as a result of these fires.
This data, typically collected over months or even years, is vital for fostering evidence-based innovations within the sugarcane sector. Dr. Kumar cautioned that a single act of arson could result in the complete loss of valuable research, hampering progress and threatening the industry’s future.
He urged the public to recognize the seriousness of the situation, explaining that arson not only endangers the financial stability of farmers but also threatens the scientific research that is crucial for the sustainability and growth of the industry.
The SRIF has appealed to the community to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.
“By working together, we can protect our sugarcane fields, preserve vital research, and ensure the continued prosperity of our industry,” he added.
