Cane farmers in Fiji will receive a record payment of $105.08 per tonne, marking the highest payout ever in the country’s sugar industry, just in time for Diwali.

Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry, emphasized that this significant financial support serves as a testament to the government’s steadfast commitment to the dedication and resilience of every farmer.

Acknowledging the difficulties faced by farmers, Singh noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the government increased the initial payout by $2.57, bringing the total increase to $4 per tonne.

“This Diwali, we are fulfilling our promise to empower farmers, making their lives a little easier, and recognizing the invaluable contributions they make daily to Fiji,” Singh stated.

He added that this historic payment reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to fostering a thriving sugar industry and ensuring that farmers’ livelihoods are strengthened and acknowledged as they move forward.
