Fiji’s Sugar Farmers Set for Major Boost Ahead of Crushing Season

The Ministry of Sugar Industry has announced a special payment of $5 per tonne of sugarcane, scheduled for disbursement on May 28. This payment will increase the total payout to farmers for the 2024 season to $91.66, with an additional payment expected in October.

This financial support is aimed at helping farmers secure labor and prepare for essential activities as the crushing season approaches. According to the ministry, this payment will ensure that farmers can cover critical pre-crushing expenses, such as labor costs, insurance, and necessary repairs on their farming equipment. Importantly, the payment will be made in full, with no deductions for fertilizers, land lease fees, or loans, allowing farmers to receive the full amount directly.

Previously, similar financial initiatives have been put in place, including a third cane payment of $12.22 per tonne, which contributed to a cumulative total of $69.63 per tonne for the 2024 season. These ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to support farmers as they navigate challenges posed by rising production costs and unpredictable environmental conditions.

The additional payment aligns with governmental strategies to uplift the sugar industry, helping farmers invest in their operations and prepare effectively for the upcoming season. Stakeholders within the industry exhibit cautious optimism that these payments will alleviate financial pressures on growers, promoting resilience within the agricultural sector.

This proactive approach to financial assistance illustrates a collaborative effort between the government and sugarcane farmers, aiming to ensure a stable future for Fiji’s vital sugar industry. As farmers receive these much-needed funds, there is hope for a productive and more sustainable season ahead.
