Between 2016 and 2021, the Fiji Police Force documented a total of 1,276 suicides and attempted suicides. This figure translates to an average of 212 cases annually, with approximately half resulting in fatalities. Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu brought attention to these statistics during a parliamentary session on Friday, responding to inquiries about the ministry’s suicide prevention efforts.
Dr. Lalabalavu noted that 2019 saw the highest number of suicide and attempted suicide incidents, totaling 244, with the Western Division consistently reporting the most cases over the six-year period. He emphasized the need to change the narrative surrounding suicide by transforming perceptions of this complex issue and moving towards a culture of openness, understanding, and support instead of silence and stigma.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 800,000 individuals die from suicide each year. Dr. Lalabalavu called for collective action to encourage discussions about suicide and its prevention. He stated that every conversation, regardless of its size, plays a crucial role in fostering a supportive and understanding community.
He urged individuals to initiate these critical conversations in various communal settings, including churches, mosques, sports fields, and traditional gatherings, to break down barriers, raise awareness, and cultivate a more supportive culture.
