Fiji’s Street Dwellers: A Growing Crisis Among iTaukei

The Catholic Church in Fiji has expressed concern over the rising number of street dwellers in Suva, many of whom are identified as iTaukei. The church’s ongoing efforts include distributing food packs to those living on the streets.

Ben Salacakau, a representative for the Catholic Church in Fiji, indicated that the sharp increase in street dwellers raises significant health concerns. He emphasized the need for a strategic plan to tackle this situation. Salacakau noted that addressing the growing number of iTaukei street dwellers requires a collaborative effort from families and communities.

The issue of street homelessness poses serious challenges not only to the individuals involved but also to their families. Local communities, including religious organizations, have shown increasing concern for street dwellers in Suva, similar to trends observed in other cities.

Salacakau shared that churches feel a strong obligation to assist those in need by providing both immediate aid such as food and shelter, as well as long-term support including counseling and job training. The church has implemented a food and nutrition program with regular distributions and soup kitchens aimed at ensuring access to nutritious meals.

He highlighted the necessity of offering counseling services to help address mental health and substance abuse issues that may contribute to homelessness. Street dwellers are often vulnerable to violence and exploitation, making it essential to ensure their safety and security.

Additionally, inadequate infrastructure poses a challenge in providing sufficient shelters and services for street dwellers. Salacakau pointed out that social stigma and discrimination can hinder these individuals from accessing necessary services and reintegrating into society, which can also impact the broader community’s willingness to support initiatives meant to help them.

He called for increased advocacy and awareness regarding the challenges faced by street dwellers, urging the development of better policies and support systems at both local and national levels.
