Fiji’s Street Dwellers: A Call for Collective Action and Support

The Catholic Church of Fiji has expressed concern over the rising number of street dwellers in Suva, most of whom are identified as iTaukei. As part of their weekly efforts, the church distributes food packs to those in need. Ben Salacakau, a representative of the church, highlighted the health implications of this increase in homelessness and emphasized the need for a strategic plan to tackle the issue.

Salacakau noted that the growing number of iTaukei street dwellers calls for a united response from families and communities. He described the situation as a major problem affecting not only the individuals but also their families and communities.

In Suva, as in many urban areas, street dwellers pose a notable challenge for local communities, including churches and various organizations. Salacakau mentioned that churches feel a strong obligation to assist those facing hardship. They aim to provide immediate support through food and shelter, and also offer long-term solutions including counseling and job training.

The church has implemented programs focused on food and nutrition, ensuring that individuals living on the streets receive healthy meals through regular food distributions and soup kitchens. Salacakau stressed the importance of offering counseling services to tackle mental health issues and substance abuse, which can contribute to homelessness.

The safety and security of street dwellers is another critical concern as they often face violence and exploitation. However, there is a challenge in terms of inadequate infrastructure to support shelters and essential services.

Furthermore, Salacakau addressed the social stigma and discrimination faced by street dwellers, which can hinder their access to services and reintegration into society. This stigma may also affect the willingness of the larger community to support related initiatives.

He emphasized the need for better coordination among various organizations, including government bodies, NGOs, and religious groups, to avoid disjointed services. Salacakau is advocating for increased awareness and advocacy to improve the policies and support systems available for street dwellers at both local and national levels.
