Relations between the United States and China have significant implications for the Asia-Pacific region, according to Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). He made these remarks during his participation in the 11th Beijing Xiangshan Forum in China last week, accompanied by Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua.
Major-General Kalouniwai emphasized that the future of Fiji and other Pacific Island nations is closely linked to the dynamics between the U.S. and China, the two largest and most influential countries in the world. He noted that a positive relationship between these nations is beneficial for the future of small countries like Fiji, as it promotes prospects for peace and prosperity in the South Pacific. However, he expressed concerns that rising tensions could jeopardize long-term stability and increase the risk of conflict.
The Commander highlighted the undeniable interdependence of the U.S. and China’s economies, which has generally been managed effectively in daily interactions. However, he acknowledged that as China’s influence grows, existing rivalries are intensifying. Major-General Kalouniwai posed critical questions regarding whether the U.S. and China would coexist peacefully or drift toward competition or hostility, stating that the answers are uncertain and depend on decisions made in both Washington and Beijing.
He underscored the urgency for the U.S. to make informed decisions regarding its rivalry with China, as these choices could have severe consequences and alter global power dynamics. The RFMF chief noted that America is at a pivotal moment concerning its response to China’s rise, with implications that extend beyond regional security.
Additionally, Major-General Kalouniwai supported Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s concept of a Zone of Peace for the South Pacific, which aligns with the goal of promoting stability amid geopolitical challenges. He described the Zone of Peace as a framework that encourages non-aggression, non-interference, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, fostering an environment of trust and collaboration among nations in the region, ultimately aiming for lasting peace and prosperity.
