Fiji’s Stand Against Child Begging: Legal Action on the Horizon

Spread the love

The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has issued a strong reminder that compelling or persuading children to beg is against the law in Fiji. The ministry has emphasized the serious dangers associated with child begging, noting that it places children at risk of exploitation, abuse, and harm while stripping them of a safe and nurturing environment.

Minister Sashi Kiran reiterated the legal obligations of parents and guardians to prioritize the safety and welfare of their children. “Encouraging or forcing children to beg violates their rights and contradicts national laws aimed at their protection,” Ms. Kiran stated, adding that those who facilitate this unlawful practice will face legal ramifications.

In partnership with law enforcement, the ministry is committed to prosecuting those who violate these laws to further ensure the wellbeing of children. The public is encouraged to report any instances of child begging by reaching out to the Child Helpline at 1325.

“Together, let us create a safer and more compassionate society where all children can enjoy a joyful and secure holiday season,” Ms. Kiran remarked. As the new year begins, the ministry calls on stakeholders and communities to help make Fiji a safer place for families and children, wishing everyone a blessed New Year filled with kindness and goodwill.

This initiative from the Ministry demonstrates a proactive approach to safeguarding children’s rights and wellbeing, encouraging community involvement in creating a supportive environment for the younger generation.
