The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is planning significant upgrades to the HFC Bank Stadium in an effort to enhance the country’s potential to host a leg of the HSBC World Sevens Series. Chief Executive Officer Gilbert Vakalalabure announced plans to expand the stadium’s seating capacity from 15,000 to approximately 25,000 by adding a new three-to-four-storey corporate box.
This ambitious project aims to not only meet the seating requirements but also position Fiji as a prestigious venue for international sporting events. Vakalalabure emphasized their commitment to completing the construction by 2026, with a goal to market the new corporate box to companies and businesses to increase game hosting opportunities.
Furthermore, this initiative aligns with the FSC’s broader efforts to improve sports infrastructure across the nation. In a related partnership, FSC recently joined forces with the Unit Trust of Fiji (UTOF) to develop sports facilities nationwide, which will benefit athletes and the wider community.
In addition to these advancements at the stadium, the FSC is also looking to bolster sports development through other major projects, such as building an international-standard facility on Koro Island, which aims to promote inclusivity and accessibility.
These developments create a hopeful landscape for sports in Fiji, enhancing both facilities and opportunities for athletes. The investments in infrastructure not only enhance the local sporting scene but also aim to foster a sense of community and pride in national sporting achievements.
