Fiji’s Social Media: A Toxic Landscape for Women and LGBTQ+ Voices

Social media in Fiji has been criticized for its extreme cruelty, sexism, and destructiveness, especially towards women and the LGBTQ+ community. Constitutional Lawyer Jon Apted brought attention to this issue during a panel discussion focused on the barriers faced by women in participating in local government elections.

Apted noted that individuals frequently encounter unwanted images of themselves on various social media platforms, with trolls often targeting users on sites like Chat Fiji and its related Facebook groups. He highlighted troubling practices, such as the posting of personal and intimate photos, as well as unfounded accusations of infidelity.

He expressed concern that such behavior discourages women from engaging in public life. Apted mentioned that there are legal frameworks in place to hold individuals accountable for their online actions but emphasized that the Online Safety Commission lacks adequate funding and personnel. He called for an increase in public awareness regarding appropriate online conduct.

Apted pointed out that addressing these issues is essential for empowering women, encouraging them to participate more actively in the public arena.
