Social media in Fiji has been described as exceptionally harsh and discriminatory, particularly towards women and the LGBTQ+ community. This concern was voiced by Constitutional Lawyer Jon Apted during a panel discussion focused on improving female participation in local government elections.
Apted pointed out that individuals often find unflattering images of themselves online, especially on platforms like Chat Fiji, where trolls frequently share personal photos and intimate moments of couples. He highlighted that allegations of infidelity are also rampant on these platforms.
He emphasized that if such behavior goes unaddressed, it significantly discourages women from participating in public life. Apted noted that there are existing laws that could hold individuals accountable for their online actions, but current measures are lacking.
He criticized the lack of funding and resources for the Online Safety Commission, stating that there has been insufficient investment in creating public awareness regarding acceptable online conduct. Apted stressed that in order for women to feel empowered to engage publicly, these issues must be resolved.
