Fiji’s SMEs Unite: A New Voice for Small Business Owners

The Fiji SME Business Owners Network aims to represent small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) operators across the country, according to founder Kim Beddoes.

She has launched a 12-town tour, starting in Rakiraki, to strengthen the network and influence the future of micro, small, and medium enterprises in Fiji.

“We want to share information about the network and emphasize the importance of collaboration among small business owners,” Ms. Beddoes stated.

The goal is to formalize the network so small business owners can have a voice in national decision-making. Ms. Beddoes highlighted that decisions affecting small businesses are often made by individuals without any firsthand experience in running them.

“By establishing this network, we hope to provide a platform for small businesses in Fiji to give feedback to whichever government is in power, ensuring it reflects the real experiences and needs of our members,” she shared.

She noted that laws designed for SMEs are frequently created without direct input from business owners. “It’s not anyone’s fault; this network didn’t exist before. We want to change that and create a formal organization to advocate for small businesses in Fiji,” Ms. Beddoes added.

The five-day tour will include informal hour-long meetings with micro, small, and medium enterprises around the country. Ms. Beddoes emphasized that this tour is a significant milestone for the Fiji SME Business Owners Network, which currently has over 630 members from various industries.
