Fiji’s SMEs Shine: Resilience and Innovation Celebrated at 2023 Awards

Nine small and medium business operators have been awarded the 2023 FDB National Small and Medium Enterprise Awards for their resilience, innovation, growth, and overall contribution to Fiji’s economic development. The winners include entrepreneurs engaged in diverse sectors such as poultry farming, upcycling, forest park tours, and kava export.

Damend Gounder, chairperson of the Fiji Development Bank board, highlighted the remarkable journey of these small businesses amidst unprecedented technological advancements and increasing challenges. He stated that these enterprises have not only made progress but have also evolved to foster greater inclusiveness while adopting greener practices and infrastructures.

Chief guest President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere praised the significant role of SMEs as vital contributors to economic wellbeing at the grassroots level. He acknowledged their resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity, commending their embrace of innovation and digital transformation.

The overall winner, Debra Sadranu, founder of Essence Group Fiji Ltd, which manufactures and distributes nama skincare products, expressed her honor at receiving recognition for their dedication and passion. She attributed the success to her team, particularly the women harvesters in Yasawa, as well as Fiji’s remarkable resources that enhance their product range.
