Nine small and medium business owners were recognized during the 2023 FDB National Small and Medium Enterprise Awards for their resilience, innovation, growth, and significant contributions to Fiji’s economic development. The winning entrepreneurs operate diverse businesses, including poultry farms, upcycling ventures, forest park tours, and kava exports.
Damend Gounder, chairperson of the Fiji Development Bank board, noted that these small businesses have embarked on an impressive journey of evolution amid rapid technological advancements and a host of emerging challenges. Gounder remarked that despite the obstacles, these enterprises have not only progressed but have also matured inclusively while adopting more sustainable practices.
Chief guest President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere praised SMEs for being crucial to economic well-being at the grassroots level. He highlighted that despite hardships, National Small and Medium Enterprises have demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability, embracing innovation and digital transformation along the way.
Debra Sadranu, the overall winner and founder of Essence Group Fiji Ltd, which produces and distributes nama skincare products, expressed her honor at receiving recognition for their dedication and passion. She thanked her team, particularly the women harvesters in Yasawa, and acknowledged the exceptional resources available in Fiji that contribute to their product line.
