Fiji’s Small Business Owners Seek Powerful Voice

The Fiji SME Business Owners Network aims to represent small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) operators across the nation, according to founder Kim Beddoes. She kicked off a 12-town tour in Rakiraki on Monday, focused on strengthening the network and shaping the future of MSMEs in Fiji.

“We wanted to share information about the network and emphasize the importance of small business owners collaborating,” said Ms. Beddoes. “Our goal is to formalize this network so that we can have a voice in the decision-making processes within our country.”

She highlighted that many decisions impacting small businesses are made by individuals who have no experience in running such enterprises. “By establishing this network, we hope to provide a platform for small businesses in Fiji, enabling us to collaborate with the current government and offer valuable feedback from our members nationwide.”

Ms. Beddoes acknowledged that decisions made at the highest levels significantly impact SMEs. “Laws affecting small businesses are often enacted without direct consultation with us. However, this has not happened before, so it is not anyone’s fault,” she noted. “We want to change that by creating a formal organization that can advocate for small businesses in Fiji.”

The tour, which spans five days and visits 12 towns, will include informal one-hour meetings with MSMEs. Ms. Beddoes described the tour as a significant milestone for the Fiji SME Business Owners Network, which currently has over 630 members from various industries across the nation.
