Small businesses play a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, accounting for 18% of the national GDP and providing jobs for 60% of the workforce. Acknowledging their significance, the government has expressed its commitment to supporting National Small and Medium Enterprises (NSMEs) as pivotal contributors to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a fresh initiative aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs, four business owners from Lamini Village in Taveuni recently received a substantial boost. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, awarded them a ‘Grant Agreement’ through the Ministry’s Trade Enhancement Programme.
The purpose of the grant is to aid the expansion of their roadside businesses, underscoring the government’s dedication to bolstering small enterprises and promoting economic growth in rural regions.
This initiative showcases the government’s proactive approach to empowering local entrepreneurs, which could serve as a model for other nations striving to enhance their small business sectors. Supporting these enterprises not only strengthens the economy but also fosters community development and resilience.
In summary, the recent government grant to Lamini Village entrepreneurs illustrates a significant commitment to nurturing small businesses, which are vital for sustainable economic growth and development in Fiji.
