Fiji’s Silent Health Crisis: Can We Tackle NCDs Head-On?

Fiji is facing a serious health crisis, with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) now accounting for 80 percent of all deaths and 40 percent of premature deaths in the country, according to Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services.

These concerning figures highlight a broader global issue, as the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that NCDs are responsible for 71 percent of all deaths worldwide, with low- and middle-income countries like Fiji particularly affected. The United Nations reports that 85 percent of premature NCD-related deaths occur in these regions.

In Fiji, the leading causes of death related to NCDs are circulatory diseases, diabetes, and cancer, affecting both men and women. The Republic of Fiji Vital Statistics Report from 2016 to 2021 confirms that NCDs are the primary cause of death across all age groups.

The financial impact on Fiji’s healthcare system is substantial, with the costs associated with NCD-related deaths and disabilities estimated at 591 million Fijian dollars in 2019 alone. The primary contributors to this health crisis include poor diet, tobacco use, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption—factors that can be modified.

Dr. Lalabalavu points out that other countries have effectively tackled NCDs through comprehensive strategies that could be emulated in Fiji. For example, Finland has launched a nationwide salt reduction campaign that has significantly decreased hypertension rates, while Australia’s stringent tobacco control measures, including plain packaging and high taxes, have led to a major drop in smoking rates. Additionally, Mexico’s introduction of a sugar tax has resulted in a 7.6 percent reduction in sugary drink consumption within the first two years.

Fiji’s Wellness Division is actively collecting important data to inform health promotion and prevention initiatives. Nonetheless, combating the NCD epidemic will necessitate a collaborative approach, strong policy reforms, and increased public awareness.

To ensure a healthier future, it is crucial for individuals to make healthier choices today.
