“Fiji’s Silent Crisis: Uncovering the Shocking Suicide Statistics”

The Ministry of Health has reported a total of 1,276 suicide and attempted suicide cases in Fiji from 2016 to 2021, averaging 213 cases annually, with nearly half resulting in death. The peak year for such incidents was 2019, which saw 244 cases. The Western Division consistently recorded the highest number of cases each year over the six-year span.

Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, emphasized the importance of changing the narrative around suicide. He advocated for a shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one rooted in openness, understanding, and support. He urged people to engage in conversations regarding suicide and its prevention.

According to Dr. Lalabalavu, the World Health Organization’s Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan (2013-2030) identifies suicide as the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29 globally. He noted that each suicide has significant emotional, social, and economic repercussions, profoundly impacting families and communities worldwide.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health plans to hold a candlelight vigil at Ratu Sukuna Park at 6 pm tonight in observance of World Suicide Prevention Day.
