Fiji’s Shocking $9.98 Million Bill for Child Abuse Cases

The Fiji Police Force incurred approximately $9.98 million in 2023 to address cases of violence against children (VAC), according to a recent study conducted by UNICEF and the Ministry of Women and Children. This substantial expenditure highlights the significant toll that such violence takes on not only the victims but also the resources of law enforcement.

The report reveals that around 6.57 percent of all reported crimes—totaling 1,101 cases—were crimes against children. By applying this percentage to the Fiji Police Force’s total operational budget of $152 million, the considerable financial impact becomes evident.

Moreover, the economic burden of VAC extends beyond policing. The study estimates that the cost of guiding a child through the criminal court system amounts to about $3 million. By extrapolating the proportion of child-related crimes to the expenditures of the Fijian State Judiciary, the total cost for prosecuting these cases is calculated at approximately $2.93 million.

Additional costs related to VAC extend into other government sectors, including health, child welfare, and education. Services provided in the child welfare domain, alongside educational repercussions capable of causing increased grade repetition or a rise in special education needs, further compound the financial implications.

This study not only highlights the immediate fiscal impacts of violence against children but also urges a broader conversation about the need for preventive measures and support systems. By addressing these issues early, the community could potentially reduce the costs associated with VAC in the long run. A proactive approach has the potential to foster a safer environment for children and lessen the financial burden on government resources, ultimately paving the way for a stronger and more resilient society.
