Fiji’s September Crime Surge: Police Call for Community Action

In September, the Fiji Police Force recorded 118 serious sexual offences. Acting Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, indicated that the predominant offence reported was rape, followed by indecent assault, sexual assault, and other related charges including abduction of minors and attempts to commit rape.

Additionally, Raikaci noted that six police officers faced serious charges, which included abuse of office, assault causing actual bodily harm, deception for financial gain, unlawful drug possession, and wrongful confinement.

The Acting Commissioner also addressed the issue of police officers being victims of crime while performing their duties, with 171 officers reporting 219 incidents. Of these, 33 were linked to multiple counts, including serious assaults and obstruction of justice.

Throughout September, a total of 838 individuals were charged with various offences, among them 48 juveniles. The age distribution of offenders included 486 individuals aged 18 to 35, 266 aged 36 to 55, and 38 aged 56 and above.

Raikaci urged communities to collaborate with the Fiji Police Force in the fight against crime, emphasizing the significance of addressing juvenile delinquency and its impact on education and future prospects. He encouraged families and communities to play a pivotal role in mentoring young people.

As the festive season approaches, the Fiji Police Force plans to enhance its operations and calls on everyone to uphold the rule of law to ensure safer communities.
