Fiji’s Security Depends on Leadership Stability

Stable leadership within the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force is essential for the security of the nation, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. He emphasized the importance of the public feeling assured about the security of these positions, which helps alleviate insecurity and uncertainty, particularly for organizations like the Fiji Police Force.

Ro Kalouniwai highlighted the necessity of having a Commissioner of Police in place, stating that it’s crucial for the organization to have strong leadership. When questioned about whether he preferred a local or an expatriate for the role, he indicated that the primary focus should be on the new commissioner’s capability to fulfill the responsibilities effectively.

He acknowledged that there have been instances in the past where military personnel led the police force, suggesting this approach had benefits. However, he believes it is now the right time to appoint a deserving leader from within the police force itself.

Regarding the previous appointment of Sitiveni Qiliho as Police Commissioner, Ro Kalouniwai refrained from passing judgment, instead calling for an evaluation of the context and conditions that warranted that decision at that time. He pointed out the need to understand the reasoning behind previous leadership choices and the requirements that influenced those decisions.
