Fiji’s Security Depends on Leadership: Insights from Major-General Kalouniwai

Stable leadership within both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force is crucial for the security of the nation, according to Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai. He emphasizes the need for the citizens of Fiji to feel assured about the security of these positions, which he believes will alleviate feelings of insecurity and uncertainty for the public and organizations like the Fiji Police Force.

Kalouniwai stresses the importance of having a Commissioner of Police in place, noting that the individual appointed should be capable of fulfilling the role. When questioned about whether he would favor a local or expatriate for the position, he indicated that the primary requirement is the ability of the new commissioner to perform the job effectively.

Reflecting on past appointments, Kalouniwai mentioned that there have been instances where military personnel have led the police force. While this has had its benefits, he believes it is time to promote someone from within the police force who is well-deserving to take on this leadership role.

Regarding the previous appointment of Sitiveni Qiliho as Police Commissioner, Kalouniwai refrains from labeling it as incorrect. He suggests that it is essential to consider the specific circumstances at that time and to evaluate if there were other suitable candidates available for the role.
