The Ministry of Education in Fiji has revealed plans to reinstate school chaplains in 13 government schools, a decision announced by Education Minister Aseri Radrodro during an induction ceremony for prefects at Natabua High School. This initiative reflects the Coalition Government’s commitment to enhancing educational quality through supportive measures that also include free education grants and financial assistance for students.
Minister Radrodro highlighted the crucial role that school chaplains will play in providing emotional and spiritual support to students, stating that alongside free textbooks and transport allowances, this initiative aims to make education accessible for all. He also emphasized the importance of parental involvement in children’s education, asserting that such engagement can significantly influence academic performance and self-esteem.
The introduction of school chaplains is part of broader government efforts to tackle social challenges among youth in Fiji. By offering guidance and promoting well-being, chaplains are anticipated to positively impact students’ lives. Funding for these positions will come from the Ministry of Education and will also extend to non-government schools through cost-sharing arrangements.
This reinstatement marks a promising development in Fiji’s educational landscape, aiming to support both the academic and emotional needs of students. By fostering collaboration among parents, educators, and the community, there is optimism for improved educational outcomes and enhanced overall well-being for students in Fiji.
