The School Management Association of Fiji continues to navigate significant challenges within the country’s educational landscape. During the organization’s biennial conference, President Govind Singh emphasized the ongoing struggle for proper recognition and inclusion in the education sector.

Singh highlighted that the association initially offered training programs for school management committees, focusing on essential topics such as budgeting, financial management, resource allocation, infrastructural development, and governance. However, these initiatives were halted in 2014 under the previous administration.

Despite a change in the government in 2022, Singh expressed concerns that the association has not been afforded equal opportunities as a key stakeholder. He pointed out that the exclusion from consultation processes has made it increasingly difficult for the school management association and committees to contribute effectively.

A significant issue has been the ongoing imposition of the School Management Handbook, which Singh described as contentious. He noted that while the association has managed to engage in discussions with the Education Minister, Assistant Minister, and the permanent secretary, they still feel sidelined.

In light of these challenges, Singh stated that the association would persist in voicing their objections and advocating against unilateral implementations that don’t align with their institutional values and ethos.

Overall, the association’s commitment to advocating for their role in the education sector reflects their dedication to improving educational governance. While the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, the continued dialogue with government officials provides a glimmer of hope for better inclusion and collaboration in the future.

In summary, the School Management Association of Fiji is actively fighting for its position and rights within the educational system, emphasizing the need for collaboration and consultation with stakeholders to ensure effective governance and management in schools.
