The School Management Association of Fiji is grappling with ongoing challenges within the nation’s education system. President Govind Singh addressed attendees at the organization’s biennial conference, highlighting the difficulties they face in securing a place within the educational landscape.

Initially, the association facilitated training programs for school management committees focusing on essential topics such as budgeting, financial management, resource allocation, and governance. Unfortunately, these initiatives were halted in 2014 under the previous government’s administration.

Despite a shift in political leadership in 2022, the association feels overlooked as a vital stakeholder in education. Singh expressed frustration over being excluded from discussions and decision-making processes, particularly regarding the contentious School Management Handbook, which has been imposed without their input.

He noted that while there have been opportunities for dialogue with the Minister for Education and other officials, the association remains committed to standing up against any unilateral decisions that conflict with their values and principles.

In summary, while the School Management Association of Fiji is facing significant hurdles in its efforts to regain influence and representation in the education sector, their determination to advocate for their rights and interests could lead to a stronger collaborative effort in the future.

This resilience and commitment suggest that, despite current obstacles, there is potential for constructive dialogue and progress that could benefit all stakeholders involved in Fiji’s educational landscape.
