Fiji’s long-distance running star, Yeshnil Karan, and his team secured second place in the Namosi Challenge, often referred to as “Fiji’s Toughest Race,” held in the Namosi highlands on Saturday. Yeshnil led his team in the 10km team race, finishing first for the group. However, their overall placement dropped to second due to delays from the other team members.
This was Karan’s first experience in the Namosi marathon, and he shared his enthusiasm about participating in the race alongside his coach, Isireli Naikelekelevesi. While the team did not clinch the victory, Karan found the event exhilarating, appreciating the unique challenges posed by the mountainous terrain, even amid rainy weather.
“This is my first ever Namosi marathon; I participated in the 10km team race, and it was great to see my coach, Isireli Naikelekelevesi, also joined this race,” said Karan. “I managed to come first for my team, but although we finished second, it was still a great race.”
He added, “The challenge was amazing. The mountains and hills created a completely different atmosphere while running. Even though it was raining, the beautiful scenery made it worthwhile.”
Reflecting on the competitive experience, Karan acknowledged the race’s tough conditions due to the hilly landscape but felt pride in completing the course first for his team. He expressed gratitude to the organizers, the Suva marathon, and the event sponsors for their support, as well as to his coach and family for their encouragement.
Taking a break from his regular training activities, Karan viewed the Namosi Challenge as a valuable opportunity to test his skills and enjoy the adventure. He appreciated the participation level and the chance to immerse himself in the stunning highland scenery while pushing his limits.
