As the Fiji Airways men’s sevens team gears up for the start of the HSBC SVNS World Series later this month, they are also turning their attention inward to enhance their preparation by participating in the Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament.
Two teams from Fiji will compete in the tournament, alongside a team from Swire Shipping Fijian Drua. Suliano Volivoli expressed confidence in using the Mataso competition as an opportunity to elevate their performance ahead of their participation in the Dubai 7s. “We are focused on preparing ourselves well for our game time there to ensure we are ready for the Dubai 7s,” Volivoli remarked.
Fans and supporters of rugby are expected to gather at the Mataso tournament in Lautoka, eager to see how the national teams perform in anticipation of the Dubai 7s. Head coach Osea Kolinisau noted that the selection process for the final team is expected to be challenging, particularly as both the men’s and women’s teams trained together recently at Bidesi Park.
Despite the pressures of his role, Kolinisau remains optimistic about the upcoming 2024/2025 World Series. The Mataso 7s will take place from November 15-16 at Churchill Park in Lautoka, providing a crucial platform for the players to showcase their skills.
Overall, this tournament serves not only as a preparation ground for the national teams but also as a festive occasion that unites fans and rugby enthusiasts, looking forward to the excitement of the upcoming international competitions. The engagement of the community in supporting these events is a testament to the sports’ growing popularity in Fiji.
