Fiji’s national rugby team, the Flying Fijians, has gained attention for Vuate Karawalevu’s impressive defensive skills and precise kicking in their recent win over Samoa. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson has hinted at the possibility of the 23-year-old fullback, known for his speed and agility, joining the Drua next season. Karawalevu has a background as captain of Marist Brothers High School rugby and is also a gold medalist in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Championships.
Jackson expressed enthusiasm about Karawalevu potentially strengthening their backline, attributing part of the Flying Fijians’ success to the 14 Drua players who participated in their 42-16 victory against Samoa during the Pacific Nations Cup on August 23 in Suva.
Looking ahead, Jackson announced plans for the Drua’s pre-season camp to be held in Kadavu, where they will be making improvements to their training base to foster the development of world-class talent. The return of player Joseva Tamani, capable of playing both back row and lock, is seen as a positive addition to the team.
Recent signings for the Drua include Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou. Ravai is noted for his experience and mentoring abilities, particularly for the front row players, while Tabuavou, who debuted in his second test against Samoa, showcased his speed and defensive skills.
Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager of the Fijian Drua, has announced plans for a 10s tournament set for December 13, aiming to make it an international event featuring teams from Skipper.
