Fine weather graced Fiji on Saturday during the sixth round of the Vodafone Cup Eastern Zone competition in the Fiji National Rugby League. Teams battled it out at the Bidesi and Buckhurst Park grounds in Laucala Bay, Suva, showcasing the spirited rugby talent in the region.
The competition includes a total of 24 teams, with 16 from the eastern divisions and eight from the west. Alongside the senior league, junior matches and the Fiji National Rugby League Women’s division also featured on this engaging day.
In the Vodafone Cup round 6 match results, the USP Raiders defeated the Veiyasana Knights 34-12, while the Serua Dragons narrowly claimed victory over City Storm with a score of 16-10. Other notable results included the Kinoya Sea Eagles defeating the Namosi Highlanders 24-18 and the Mataivalu Bears falling just short against the Makoi Bulldogs, losing 12-8. Additional matches saw the Vusu Raiders prevail over the Nabua Broncos 24-16, and the Navy Albatross triumph against the Lami Steelers 32-7, while the Davuilevu Knights and Police Sharks played to an even 14-14 draw.
The Premier Grade also saw thrilling matches, with the Namosi West Tigers edging out the West Coast Storms 18-16 and the Namuaniwaqa team securing a 26-14 win over the Ravoravo Rabbitohs.
The Junior and Women’s league results added to the excitement of the day, with the Nadera Panthers performing strongly in the U18 grade, overwhelming the Makoi Bulldogs 36-0, and the USP Raiders winning by default over the Nabua Broncos in the U16 category. In the Women’s matches, the East State team’s commanding performance against the Nadera Panthers (52-4) underscored the competitive nature of the league.
