Fiji Bulikula captain Talei Holmes has highlighted the strong bond that the players have formed in a short time together. “We have established a connection off the field through devotions and team meetings, which is crucial,” she stated.
Holmes also noted the strengths of the Cook Islands team, particularly mentioning Kiana Takairangi at full-back, who she believes will pose a significant threat around the ruck. She emphasized the importance of solidifying their ruck play and maintaining strong defense.
Having represented her country on two occasions prior, Holmes expressed that being captain this year is a significant honor, one she did not anticipate so soon. “I’m thrilled and can’t wait to lead the girls,” she said.
As this is her first time participating in the Pacific Championship while in the country, Holmes expressed her enthusiasm. “It means a lot to me to see the younger generation coming through. It’s incredible, and I’m very excited to play in front of them,” she added.
Holmes conveyed that the team is taking their upcoming challenge seriously, aiming to secure a place in the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, stating, “It would mean everything to the country if we qualify.”
The Fiji-Cook Islands Test will take place on Saturday, with the winner advancing to Auckland to face Samoa on November 2 for a chance to qualify for the World Cup. Meanwhile, Fetu Samoa will observe this match after defeating Tonga 30-16. Tonga and the losing team from the Fiji-Cook Islands match will be eliminated from World Cup contention, but the runner-up in Auckland will still have a chance to compete for a spot at the 2026 Rugby League World Cup in the World Series in 2025. Additionally, the victor in Auckland will face the third-placed team from the Pacific Cup on November 10 at CommBank Stadium for a chance at promotion to the top tier next year.
