Fiji’s Rugby Dream Faces Setback as Star Brothers Step Back

Fiji Bati has faced a significant setback for the upcoming 2024 Pacific Championships, as brothers Daniel and Jacob Saifiti have decided not to participate in the tournament. The duo last represented Fiji in 2017, and fans will have to wait longer to see them back on the international stage.

In an interview, the Saifiti brothers expressed their intention to compete for Fiji in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, which will take place in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Daniel Saifiti confirmed, “I definitely will again, that’s for sure.” He mentioned his conversations with someone from the Fiji camp and indicated that due to club transitions and other commitments, he cannot participate this year. He remains optimistic about playing next year.

Fiji is expected to field a revamped squad for the tournament, as other key players like Brandon Wakeham, Apisai Koroisau, and Jahream Bula are also unavailable. Head coach Wise Kativerata noted that discussions are ongoing with several other players, including Mark Nawaqanitawase from the Sydney Roosters.

The Fiji Bati will compete against the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Bowl tournament in the coming months, with the winner qualifying for the Pacific Championships next year.

The predicted Fiji team for the 2025 Pacific Championships includes players such as Sunia Turuva, Maika Sivo, Mark Nawaqanitawase, and Viliame Kikau, among others.

Interchange players are expected to feature Kitione Kautoga, Gordon Whippy, Apisalome Saukuru, and Caleb Navale.
