Fiji’s Roving Ambassador to the Pacific, William Toganivalu, has conveyed Fiji’s support and best wishes for Samoa’s preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled for October.
During a recent ceremony in Apia, Toganivalu presented his Letter of Credence to Samoa’s Head of State, His Highness Afioga Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, expressing the Fijian Government’s eagerness for the gathering. The Head of State expressed appreciation for the support from other Pacific nations and looked forward to hosting Fiji and other members of the Commonwealth in Apia.
The Head of State also expressed confidence in Toganivalu’s role as the Non-Resident High Commissioner of Fiji to Samoa, stating that it would enhance relations and cooperation on mutual interests.
Toganivalu paid a courtesy call to Samoa’s Deputy Prime Minister, Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio. During their meeting, Ponifasio recognized Fiji’s expertise in tourism and hospitality, and highlighted the potential for Samoa-Fiji collaboration in this sector. Ponifasio also discussed labor mobility and the necessary arrangements that could be established between the two governments and their immigration departments.
As part of his visit, Toganivalu also met with members of the Fijian diaspora community living and working in Samoa. A ‘talanoa’ (Q&A) session addressed issues such as passport issuance, renewal processes, and remittance facilitation.
Additionally, Toganivalu met with Fijian businesses operating in Samoa, including Vodafone, Kooline, Oceania Gas, and CJ Patel.
Overall, Toganivalu’s week-long engagement in Samoa reinforced diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties. Samoa and Fiji, which established diplomatic relations in 1974, continue to maintain cordial relations based on shared history, cultural heritage, and mutual respect.
