Fiji’s Roving Ambassador Strengthens Ties with Nauru

Mr. William Toganivalu, Fiji’s traveling ambassador to the Pacific Island Countries and Territories, recently presented his letter of credentials to His Excellency David Adeang, the President of the Republic of Nauru, as Fiji’s non-resident high commissioner.

Ambassador Toganivalu received a formal welcome with a customary Guard of Honour from the Nauru Police Force. During their meeting, he thanked President Adeang for the warm reception and highlighted the enduring friendship and collaboration between Fiji and Nauru, which stem from shared cultural values and a commitment to regional prosperity and development.

President Adeang emphasized Nauru’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Fiji and addressing the opportunities and challenges faced by the Pacific region together. He recalled his meeting in June with Hon. Sitiveni Rabuka, Fiji’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister, during which he reiterated Nauru’s support for the Ocean of Peace program aimed at fostering stability and peace in the Pacific.

After presenting his credentials, Ambassador Toganivalu made courtesy calls to several Nauruan government ministers, including Reagan Winson Aliklik (Minister of Transport), Honorable Charmaine Scotty (Minister of Health and Medical Services), Darrina Kun (Secretary of Education), and Lionel Rouwen Aingimea (Former President and Current Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Justice, and Border Control).

The ambassador was also warmly welcomed by the Fijian community in Nauru, prior to a Talanoa session where Fijian nationals expressed their appreciation for the chance to inquire about immigration services, work contracts, and other relevant topics.

Additionally, Ambassador Toganivalu discussed new initiatives undertaken by Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to engage more effectively with the Fijian diaspora, particularly highlighting an updated website featuring a portal for diaspora members to register their contact information. He noted that this innovation would improve the Ministry’s responsiveness in emergencies and enhance communication with Fijians living abroad.

Furthermore, Ambassador Toganivalu extended his heartfelt thanks for the remittances made by the Fijian diaspora, which significantly contribute to the economies of both Nauru and Fiji. He underscored the importance of cultural heritage preservation and maintaining strong connections to one’s homeland.
