Small businesses play a crucial role in Fiji’s economy, contributing 18% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing employment for 60% of the workforce. Understanding their significance, the Fijian government has pledged its continued support for National Small and Medium Enterprises (NSMEs) as essential contributors to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In a recent empowering initiative, four entrepreneurs from Lamini Village in Taveuni received substantial help with a ‘Grant Agreement’ from the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica. This grant, part of the Ministry’s Trade Enhancement Programme, aims to assist these local business owners in expanding their roadside enterprises.
This effort highlights the government’s commitment to promoting small businesses and driving economic growth in rural communities, providing a hopeful outlook for future entrepreneurial endeavors throughout the country.
In summary, the support for small businesses in Fiji not only strengthens the economy but also uplifts communities and fosters sustainable development, ensuring a brighter future for local entrepreneurs.
